How to Find a Reputable Asbestos Laboratory

The NVLAP Asbestos Fiber Analysis program provides assurance that laboratories are competent to analyze asbestos samples using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and/or transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Bulk Sampling: Another Form of Mold Collection

Bulk sampling collects a destructive test of materials, such as pieces of building materials and carpet segments, and determines if they contain or show mold growth. A small portion of the material is collected that can be transported and handled easily by the laboratory (a 2” x 2” square piece is more than enough). The sample can be cultured for species identification or analyzed using direct microscopy for genus identification.

Detective Work with Asbestos Samples

Once a building material we've received is placed under the stereoscope for viewing, the analyst attempts to locate fibers in the matrix and pull them out with forceps. This is possible, and even plausible for certain kinds of materials: sheet vinyl, Transite, and popcorn ceiling (aka acoustic ceiling) textures. But, it’s nearly impossible for other types of materials like mastics, joint compounds, paint, and floor tiles. If the material allows the analyst to pull fibers, then the detective work is short lived. If fibers are potentially bound into the matrix of the material, then other methods are employed to break apart the matrix.
